It's been an adventure so far! A bit over a year ago I moved from #PerformanceEngineering to #SRE. In this article I take some time to reflect: What I have learned so far? What are the impediments to implementing SRE in an organisation unfamiliar with it? What questions have I yet to answer? What technologies and tools did I work on? Shout out to Sebastian V. whose ideas I draw on in the article, Gwen Berry both for jumping off the SRE deep end with me and for joining me in presenting at SLOconf, and the PurePerformance Podcast + the On Call Me Maybe Podcast for helping all of us grow and learn in the field of SRE.
Great work Stephen, I've just started catching up on Slight Reliabilty this week and I'm really enjoying your perspective and insights as someone "new" to the field of SRE and with a unique perspective. I say "new", because I think you are actually carrying a lot of SRE-like experience and expertise into the role already, regardless of titles, etc. I'm only up to episode 23 so far, but very much looking forward to catching up to real-time soon. Keep it up.
Wow, what a recap! Embarking on the SRE journey has been a whirlwind, and also the biggest year of growth and learning. Your insights, guidance, and experimentation with SRE during this time has been pivotal to our little team. I'll definitely be sharing this reflection around! #DTU
I really appreciate your kind words Stephen Townshend . Thank you . I am an SRE advocate, coach and teacher at heart. I have found my niche and I am passionate about sharing with you and everyone else.
I always thought that performance engineers end up making great SREs, but maybe that's because I spent too much time listening to Andreas Grabner ;)
Thanks for sharing your down to earth words, insights, and links to other resources - I'm sure many teams that are part of or interact with SRE practices (beginning or mature) will find this very useful - I know I did!
Great point on “dont copy Google”. However. They just published a new short handbook called “Enterprise Roadmap for SRE” where they give more practical tips for “non-unicorns. Worth a read: https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/sre.google/en//static/pdf/enterprise-roadmap-to-sre.pdf
