Attended #NTTDAnalystday in Barcellona. Two days well spent, starting with a guided visit of the #picasso museum. Event was at the cool NTT DATA Spanish HQs, where we were updated by execs and leaders on NTT DATA strategies and asset driven services with a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, transformation services, GenAI and more. In Forrester w've coined Generative AI for SW Development as TuringBots. An umbrella name for various AI and genAI empowered SDLC assistants. We all know what happened at the end of 2022 with ChatGPT, right ? ...well I started writing about AI in software development in 2016. With Mike Gualtieri we came up with the name TuringBots in 2020 (have to give credit, the cool name was Mike's idea). I won't list all the reports we wrote on #TuringBots, but to be fair to non Forrester readers three free blogs you can read here https://lnkd.in/dh-zeXYt written before 2022. In 2022 TuringBots became one of the top Ten Forrester Emerging Techs https://lnkd.in/d6WSikXR. It took exactly a few more years to get where we are today, where we could start writing about client organisation's experiences in adopting TuringBots. This case study https://lnkd.in/dzdKar38 is of a London based quantitative research and technology firm G-Research that shares with us what their journey has been with TuringBots in the last few years. The post scratches the surface of what G-Research has been doing, but shares a pragmatic approach and use of what Generative AI would become for SW development, in my humble opinion and not only mine, a disrupting new approach to software development. The case study focusses mostly on the use of "Coder TuringBots", tools like #githubcopilot or #chatgpt and others, but G-Research won't be stopping with #CoderTuringBots, their journey is ongoing and more ambitious. My biggest take away from this specific case study, besides the various learnings of how #CoderTuringBots can increase productivity, sustain creativity, and increase developer's fun, is how G-Research with several hundred quite skilled, if not, very skilled developers, have found this technology very helpful. Contrary to what many think, not a technology just for new entry developers. So if G-Research is doing this, why can't you ? The attitude and willingness, and the trust that AI can do us good, matters too. Yes there are guardrails and governance to put in place to avoid the risks that come with TuringBots. But don't get discouraged by those. I also enjoyed seeing how Mark has been exceptional in creating the perfect dialogue with the engineers, developers, executives and technology enthusiasts in his company. I want to thank Merve Kandemir who pushed this case study forward and Mark Burnett head of innovation group at #G-research who spent precious time with us. GitHub released many new cool shiny objects at GitHub Universe 2023 in the form of a true scaling enterprise AI infused platform. One object shined most: Their well known Coder TuringBot GitHub Copilot. (You can read about Forrester TuringBots here: https://lnkd.in/gy44aYS7). One of the points highlighted in the blog below of my esteemed Forrester colleagues, Alla Valente and C., is about "New standards for AI safety and security". The point starts with  "Currently, no formal AI red-teaming (structured testing to find flaws and vulnerabilities in an AI system) requirements exist. That changes ..." I'd like to reinforce the importance this point has on "testing". The crucial role of "Testing of AI" has been under-estimated, and ignored in many cases, but not by Forrester. Perhaps Biden EO on AI agenda will push the research on how we can test AI more effectively, including how we can test LLMs and Generative AI with all the software it gets infused in. Many think TuringBots can only generate code from natural language prompts, program context and comments, just as GenAI does. That’s a very limited view (limited view also of the power of AI and GenAI tools applied to Sw development). Check the following definition to understand why. #Forrester’s definition of #TuringBots: “AI-powered software that augments application development and infrastructure and operations (I&O) teams’ automation and semiautonomous capabilities to plan, analyze, design, code, test, deliver, and deploy while providing assistive intelligence on code, development processes, and applications.” Yes one of the TuringBots is “Coder TuringBot” for code generation as you define. But other TuringBots address other stages of the Sw development lifecycle as well, giving birth to a new and more effective way of building Sw products and applications !! https://lnkd.in/dcpV-7vt

A #Coder #TuringBot like #githubcopilot or #Tabnine today can increase coding productivity of a developer between 30 to 50%, but what about the other steps of the SDLC ? Testing comes next between 20-30% through #Tester TuringBots like Appvance Testim.io and other, 10%-15% during delivery time with #Deliver TuringBots like #Watson Code Assistant or #Amazon DevOps Guru and the rest is still early days, with sparse productivity increase. So overall I estimate that using TuringBots throughout the SW development lifecycle we can improve product development productivity around 10-15% on average today. That is what my #Forrester qualitative research study shows. However 2-5 years from now, TuringBots will increase productivity to un-imaginable levels. What will the impact be on the software development market ? What will you do with that increased Productivity ? Generative AI: What It Means For Software Development. TuringBots Forrester has branded AI and generative AI for software development as TuringBots since its inception in 2020. The good news is that generative AI (genAI) has advanced the maturity of TuringBots by at least five to 10 years. So how has genAI changed the state of TuringBots today in the market? TuringBots impact all companies in all industries, although the adoption pace across different industries varies. Technology executives in all industries need to learn how to deal with TuringBots.
